In the year 2006, the total number of legitimate fires needing fire and rescue service in United Kingdom was 426, 200. Although this is 4,100 cases less than the 430, 300 fires in the year 2005, the citizens and the fire department should not be lenient in implementing fire safety in the community. It should prompt them to firmly apply fire safety practices in their homes, in business establishments and in public institutions.
However, no matter how you try to prevent fire form causing threats to your properties, some accidents just cannot be prevented. Damages to properties are not amiss and harm to human lives and livestock can be expected. Fires are the most dreadful catastrophe that leaves a family or a community homeless and making thousands of workers jobless.
So before fires can cause havoc to your homes and needlessly take lives, employ these helpful tips and you will not regret it.
Useful Information
Installing smoke detectors can do you a big favor. Many people die of smoke inhalation rather than fire itself so that at the first sign of fire, you can be warned about an impending fire. You can either contain it or move people away from the fire and save some important items along the way. See to it that your smoke detectors are working properly and replace them according to manufacturer’s directions.
Keep flammable objects out of reach of children. These can be deadly to the children and certainly dangerous to you, other family members and properties. Moreover, never smoke inside the bedroom or near objects that can catch fire easily like curtains, linens and writing materials. Never leave lit cigarettes anywhere. Make sure they are properly extinguished in ashtrays. Furthermore, make sure you leave all kitchen appliances unplugged at night when it is time for you to hit the bed. Do not leave machines turned on at night. And never ever overload electrical outlets. You will never know when it will break down, so do not wait until it happens. Replace broken cords with new ones and tuck them in safe and hidden places. Â Orient household members of escape routes and make sure to keep these routes free from obstruction. Escape routes must be accessed easily and will ensure that you will be in a safe place at the soonest time possible. Delays can cost you precious lives.
When fire is inevitable, do the RACE to safety as formulated by RACE stands for Rescue, Alert, Confine and Evacuate. You must rescue yourself and anyone in immediate danger, alert by activating fire alarm, confine the fire by closing doors and windows and evacuate using stairs immediately. It is good if you have fire extinguisher on hand, but specific types of fires require specific fire extinguishers so do not be too confident about putting out the fire on your own. It is also an advantage to have automatic sprinkler system installed in your homes. Extinguishing fire will then be easier and fewer damages can be incurred.
